Hunger

Lily watched.
She watched them dance, their gyrating shadows on the sand. She watched them drink; oh the hangovers in store for them. She watched the girl, so happy amongst her friends.
The girl was thin and young, around the age of sixteen. Her hair was dark, pulled back loosely with a ribbon. Her bright green eyes were exposed and glimmered in the bonfire.
Lily hung back amongst the parked cars and watched them. Over the din of the teenage rambling, she kept listening for any sign of danger. She tensed momentarily at the distant wail of a siren, but relaxed as it passed on. She turned back to the crowd.
Something was tugging at her senses. She mentally swatted it away, but like a mosquito it continued to persist. She knew what it was all too well, but could not allow herself to succumb to its entices.
She inhaled deeply.
She could smell it on the wind now. It inflamed her senses almost painfully, yet she inhaled again. A smile played on her onyx lips. She was in control, but she reasoned a moment of memory wouldn't hurt.

Her thoughts drifted back, to so long ago. In the beginning, she had denied her true self; she wished she was dead. But he had been there for her since before the beginning and was very patient with her progress. One night they had gone out together. She was very hungry but refused to eat. He had taken her hand and led her in. The moment it touched her tongue a new world exploded within her soul. It burned and froze, it lived and died. All things were in an instance known unto her and she never wanted to go back. She released a satisfied sigh.
Lily's eyes snapped open at a scream that sliced through the din.

In a massive movement, the crowd dispersed in a panic. Lily moved away as individuals tumbled over one another to get to their cars. Her eyes furiously sought out the girl with the bright green eyes. She saw her kneeling over a fallen young man. Her face was hidden by her hair, which had come loose from the ribbon. Lily watched as the girl's body twitched as if she was sobbing.
As the last of the vehicles rushed out of sight, Lily approached the younger girl. The girl was clutching onto the young man's shirt. When Lily reached his feet she coughed.
The girl looked up into Lily's violet eyes. What was formerly bright green was now blazing violent red, the same color of what was dripping from her lips. Lily gave the girl a weary look.
"Now Eve, can you tell me what you did wrong?"
Eve's breath was ragged but slowed as her eyes transitioned back into green. She wiped her mouth with her had and then looked down at the body. "Ah damn" she breathed and looked at Lily. In a mechanized tone, she replied, "I didn't lead him away from the others before feeding."
"And?"
Eve groaned. "And by exposing myself in public, I may have put our whole family in mortal danger. Alright, I get it!"
"Do you?"
"Ah step off sis, I'm still young."
"Yes, but that's no excuse for being sloppy. You've got to learn fast and take your lessons seriously. Our species would have died out years ago if we had all been as cocky as you. What would father say if he was here instead of me?"
Eve cringed.
"That's right." Lily took a slow, calming breath. She looked at the downcast girl. "I'm sorry. I'm not as patient as father is. It's not entirely your fault." Eve looked up hopefully. "I should have been watching you more carefully."
The two girls twitched at the approaching sirens. "Come on, Eve, let's go home."
As they flew off into the night, Eve was about to say something when Lily cut her off. "I'll take full credit this time. But you owe me to learn to control yourself better."
Eve gave Lily and fanged smile.

Who am I?!

Black. Like a blindfold before my eyes. And then, all was clear. Why hadn't I seen it before? It made so much sense!
Finally! I was free of this paralyzing weight on my consciousness.
But, now, what's to become of me now that I know? Has it all been for nothing, am I nothing more than a shell of that great thing I had been?

...

What have I become?

Crash Landing

As the captain turned the seat belt sign on, I swore that this time around would be just as good and as fortunate as the previous one. As I looked out the cabin window the sun was just dipping beneath the cloud line; what a beautiful sight. I had just finished my meal of fillet Mignon and salad when suddenly, the plane jerked, but only for a second. Then it happened again, more violently. The stewardess told us not to worry, that it was just turbulence, but I could see panic in her eyes. I wondered if things like this happened often. I looked out the window again. The plane was now below the cloud line in a low, jerky descent. I could see a storm billowing in the distance, lightning crashed on the horizon. The turbulence lessened until it was apparently over. The pilot said we would be landing soon.
A man next to me placed his hand over mine and smiled at me comfortingly. "Don't worry, everything will be alright." I thanked him and tried to think of things to keep me calm until we were safely on the ground.
And then, without warning, a blinding light engulfed my body and I felt myself being pulled up. I tried to grasp onto something to keep from floating away but I found none. Then there was a pain, first all over my body then it was concentrating around my neck. I tried to scream but no sound escaped my lips. I began to cry as the pain became almost too much to bare. I couldn't breathe; the air felt as though it was being drawn from my lungs. I was suddenly very cold and wet. I wanted to die.
And then it stopped.
